5.20 miles Katahdin Stream Campgound |
From the Togue Pond Gate (south entrance) to Baxter State Park drive west/northwest 8 miles on the Baxter State Park Tote (Nesowadnehunk) Road to the Katahdin Stream Campground entrance. Then go .1 mile up the driveway on your right. Allow 30 minutes for the 8 mile drive from the Togue Pond Gate as this is dirt road. --- Baxter State Park Authority restricts the number of vehicles that can park at the trailheads. At the gate you must declare your intentions. If you are climbing Mt. Katahdin, make sure you are at the gate by 5 AM on weekend mornings (6 AM-weekdays) if not earlier. Restrictions are much looser if you already have reservations in the park, but that requires significant advanced planning and reservations to be made many months in advance. Do not just show up expecting to get a campsite in the park. --- Aaron Schoenberg --- |

7.60 miles Daicey Pond |
From the Togue Pond Gate (south entrance) to Baxter State Park drive west/northwest 10 miles on the Baxter State Park Tote (Nesowadnehunk) Road to Daicey Pond Road. Then go 2 miles on this road to your left. Allow 45 minutes for the 12 mile drive from the Togue Pond Gate as this is dirt road. --- I never parked here but it is a good access point for dayhiking southbound on the AT along the Nesowadnehunk Stream past the Big & Little Niagara Falls. Also, this location is for a group of park rental cabins. Reservations for these cabins must be made well in advance. The famous view of Katahdin across Daicey Pond is also located here along with canoe rentals. 3/9/06 --- Aaron Schoenberg --- |
I am really not sure of the number. Note that the Baxter Park Authority restricts. At Togue Gate indicate your destination of Daicey Pond & hiking AT southbound. |

15.10 miles Abol Bridge |
From Millinocket, follow signs toward Baxter State Park. Eight miles from Millinocket, you will see Big Moose Inn on the right. Make a left for 50 yards and then a right. Now you are at the causeway of Millinocket Lake on Golden Road. Continue 11 more miles to Abol Bridge. Allow 30 minutes for the 19 mile trip (all paved road). Before the bridge is the Abol Bridge Campground Store. I have asked for permission within the store and parked here (9/02). Official parking according to ME AT Map and Guide is just after crossing the bridge on the left side of the road. --- Northbound: From here you enter Baxter State Park. A great 15 mile circular hike with only the first and last mile retracing steps, no park entry fee or restrictions, no car shuttle, easy terrain (1250 total elevation gain), takes you past Katahdin Stream Campground (MM 5.2) is to use the Blueberry Ledge Trail at MM 14.2 to complete the loop. It starts on the AT and comes out .4 mile east of Katahdin Stream Campground at The Birches Campsite on the Baxter Park Road. Return southbound with AT. Southbound: Start of entry into Hundred Mile Wilderness. Backpacking required. 3/10/06 --- Aaron Schoenberg --- |
100 Unlimited parking on both sides of the Abol Bridge over the West Branch of the Penobscot River. Two campgrounds and a store are located here. The trail goes along the road here for .5 mile. |

32.50 miles Pollywog Stream Bridge - logging road |
From Millinocket, travel south on ME 11 - 17 miles. Here you make a right turn onto JoMary Road and come to the JoMary Gate. From here on it is all private gravel logging roads (logging trucks have right of way and barrel down the road - use caution to avoid getting hit by logging trucks and moose) and a fee (per person) is charged to use them. In 6 miles you come to a fork with Johnston Pond Road (.4 mile after Jo Mary Lake Campground entrance on the right), take right fork continuing north on Jo-Mary Road about 10 miles to the Henderson Checkpoint (do not know if there is another fee to continue beyond here). Continue past the checkpoint about 6 miles to the three way intersection. At this junction continue straight about 7 miles to the bridge across Pollywog Stream. The AT also crosses the bridge. Park on the left past the bridge. I have not traversed this road beyond Henderson Checkpoint and these directions beyond that point were provided by Glenn Benkert, gbenkert @ fuse.net on notes he provided me with 11/07/02. The total distance from Millinocket is 46 miles and you should allow 1:30. --- Northbound: It is 17.3 miles of relatively easy terrain that the AT traverses and could be done in a long day from here to Abol Bridge. However the car ride for a shuttle is prohibitive. Note that from this access point you can go .7 miles to the right (northbound) to Nahmakanta Lake Camps. AT hikers can use their facilities for multi-night stays only from Memorial Day thru Labor Day. Beyond Labor Day and until hunting season (end of Oct.)they will accommodate hikers on a one-night basis. This accommodation info I learned from Don Gibbs back in Summer 2003. When I do hike this section (Abol Bridge south to the last JoMary Road crossing (MM 14.9 in section 2) ) in the future, I will try and use this facility as an overnight stop in my travel. The website for this camp is www.nahmakanta.com . JoMary Lake Campground. I highly recommended this as a base for accommodations for all dayhiking in this area & had trailer rentals on site, also hot showers, full bathrooms with hot water, canoe rentals, loons & outstanding view of Mt. Katahdin across Upper JoMary Lake. You pass this CG en route to this and the next five access points. I stayed here in Sept. 2003. Their website is http://www.campmaine.com/jo-mary/. 3/10/06 --- Aaron Schoenberg --- |
