Sorry, Virginia kindof breaks my design. Will try to improve, may split Virginia into multiple parts.

0.00 miles US 50 - Ashby Gap |
The north end of this section is where the trail crosses US 50. The crossing is just west of the intersection of US 50 and VA 601. The marker on the attached map indicates the location of the trail crossing. GPS at trail crossing N 39.0168 W 77.9649 --- The street view on the attached map shows possible roadside parking on the westbound side of US 50. This is where the northbound trail enters the wood. I am not sure of the legality or the advisability of parking here. See next listings for better parking in the area. The northbound AT comes in from the west, crosses the median, then goes back into the woods to the east. 12/08/17 --- David Cullen --- |

From the Eastbound side of Rt. 50 take Rt. 600 just west of Ashby Gap), Liberty Hollow Rd. There's a dirt parking lot just off the highway for about 6 or so cars. From the parking lot a well worn path, with VA Conservation Land signs, goes to the A.T. in less than 0.1 mi. --- The location of the parking area on Liberty Hill Road is indicated by the marker on the attached map. The parking area can be dimly seen in the street view to the south from the westbound lane of US 50 at the intersection with Liberty Hill Road. GPS N 39.0183 W 77.9685 12/06/17 --- Judy McGuire --- |

1.80 miles Ambassador Whitehouse Trail |
See entry for North Ridge Trail (Mile 2.5) for directions to the Sky Meadows State Park Visitor Center. --- This is a new trail made possible by the purchase by the National Park Service of the former Ovoka Farm north of Sky Meadows State Park. The AT has been relocated through this area. This relocation is included in the current edition of the 'AT Guide to Maryland and Northern Virginia' (17th ed). To reach the AT via this trail follow the North Ridge trail approximately 0.7 miles west from the Visitor Center. The blue-blazed Ambasssador Whitehouse trail goes north and then west to meet the AT in an additional 1.1 miles. Northbound AT is right. Southbound as I recall is more or less straight ahead. Coordinates at the AT intersection are 39.002641, -77.980673 1/07/2010 updated 2/10/2021 --- David Cullen --- |

2.50 miles North Ridge Trail--Sky Meadows SP |
From I-66 ( Exit 23, I believe) take US 17 north for about 7 miles or from US 50 take US 17 south for 0.7 miles. Go west on VA 710, the entrance road to Sky Meadows State park. Drive to Visitor Center. Ample parking --- There are a number of state park trails. The blue-blazed North Ridge Trail, which goes west from the Visitor Center, is the shortest route (1.7 miles)to the AT. See AT Guide to Maryland and Northern Virginia for description of trail. A park bench is at the intersection with the AT. Northbound AT is right, southbound is left. 3/12/06 --- David Cullen --- |

3.10 miles Trail to Orchard Parking Area |
There is another parking area about 0.5 miles north of the one at Signal Knob. (See Mile 3.7). According to the 17th edition of the Appalacchian Trail Guide to Maryland and Northern Virginia, this is called the Orchard Parking area. Note the warning about the condition of the road. --- The marker on the attached map indicates the parking area. An unblazed path goes east 0.1 miles to meet the AT. As I recall, the northbound AT bears east here, so at this point, the southbound AT goes right, the northbound AT goes more or less straight ahead. This area is part of the Thompson Wildlife Management Area. 11/15/09 --- David Cullen --- |

3.70 miles Trail to Signal Knob Parking Area |
See directions to Ted Lake Trail (Mile 9.2). Continue north on VA 638. At Parking Area 7 (See mile 6.2) paved VA 638 turns sharply left. Continue north on gravel road for about 2 miles. (estimated from map) to parking area for Signal Knob. Total distance from Linden and intersection of VA 638 and Rte. 55 is about 8 miles. This area is part of the Thompson Wildlife Management Area. Warning: I have not driven to this lot but previous ATC Guides have warned that the section of road past Route 638 is not driveable for most cars. The current 17th edition is silent on the matter. I do not know if this means the road has been improved or not. Note: the attached Google Map calls the access road the Appalachian Trail, but this is not the case. --- See attached map. The parking area is marked by the green arrow. From there a trail runs east to meet the AT in about 0.1 miles. Both this spur trail and the AT are clearly visible on the satellite view. At the AT the southbound trail goes right, the northbound goes left. 11/15/09 --- David Cullen --- |
