0.00 miles US 2 |
The official north end of this section is at the intersection of North Road and US 2 3.6 miles east of Gotham. Parking right at this spot is difficult and probably illegal. The southbound AT (to Section 2) follows US 2 east crossing the highway bridge over the Rattle River, then goes right. There is a parking lot here, which is the trailhead for the Rattle River Trail (part of the AT). See Mile 0.2 . The intersection at mm 0.0 can also be seen on the satellite vies and street views on the map attached there. 0.20 miles Rattle River Trail |
While there is limited to no parking at the official northern end of this section ( mm 0.0) this lot is available nearby. The AT follows US 2 for 0.2 miles then goes right through this lot and stars up the Rattle River Trail section of the AT. The road walk is shown on the attached map. The marker indicates the parking lot which is visible on the satellite view and also on the street view map. GPS at the parking area: N44.4011 W71.1094 --- 6/28/18 --- David Cullen --- |

5.90 miles Carter-Moriah Trail |
Follow US 2 east from the junction with NH 16 in Gorham. In approximately 0.5 miles make a sharo right onto paved Bangor Road just past the bridge and railroad track. Go about 0.5 miles to the turnaround at its end. Park only on the left side of the road opposite the houses. The marker on the attached map shows the trailhead area. --- This trail climbs 3400 feet in 4.5 miles to very near the summit of Mt. Moriah, then descends a short distance to the AT. The Carter-Moriah trail turns right and becomes the AT. The northbound AT goes left as the Kenduskeag Trail. 7/14/06 --- David Cullen --- |
Roadside parking for 5-6 cars |
7.30 miles Stony Brook Trail |
The trailhead for this trail is on NH 16 just south of the bridge over the Peabody River and about 2 miles south of Gorham. The parking lot is on the east side of the road. The parking lot here is maintained by the White Mountain National Forest and a WMNF parking permit (or equivalent) is required. The marker on the attached map indicates the trailhead parking lot. --- The Stony Brook Trail climbs 2200 feet in 3.6 miles to reach the AT, here part of the Carter-Moriah Trail, in the col between North Carter Mt. and Mt. Moriah. The northbound trail to Mt. Moriah goes left, the southbound trail to Imp Campsite and the Carters goes right. 10/24/06 --- David Cullen --- |

9.90 miles North Carter Trail |
Parking for this trail is at the trailhead(s) for the Imp Trail. The north Trailhead is on the east side of NH 16 about 2.6 miles north of the Mt. Washington Auto Road and 5.4 miles south of Gorham. Parking for 4-5 cars. The south trail head is 0.3 miles further south on NH 16. Parking for a similar number of cars. I saw no signs at either trail stating that a White Mountain National Forest parking permit is required. The parking area may be on state highway right-of-way. The marker on the attached map shows the approximate location of the north trailhead for the Imp Trail. --- From the north trailhead the Imp Trail gains 2000 feet in 3.1 miles to reach the junction with the North Carter Trail. This goes left (east) and climbs 1200 feet in 1.2 miles to meet the AT (here called the Carter-Moriah Trail.) 10/24/06 --- David Cullen --- |

9.90 miles North Carter Trail |
The marker on the attached map here shows the approximate location of the south trailhead of the Imp Trail which leads to the North Carter Trail which is followed to the AT near the summit of North Carter. 07/28/08 --- David Cullen --- |

12.60 miles Zeta Pass |
See Mile 15.4 and the map attached there for directions to the Nineteen Mile Brook Trailhead on NH 16. --- The Nineteen Mile Brook Trail climbs 850 feet in 1.9 miles to the junction with the Carter Dome Trail, which goes left. This latter trail climbs another 1500 feet in 1.9 miles to reach the AT in Zeta Pass. Total distance from NH 16 is 3.8 miles. To the left the northbound AT, here part of the Carter-Moriah Trail, starts to climb South Carter Mt. The southbound AT goes right as does the Carter Dome Trail. For part of the way to the summit of Carter Dome, the two trails coincide. The Carter Dome Trail follows the old road to the former fire tower on Carter Dome. It bypasses the climb to Mt. Hight. It rejoins the AT at mile 13.6 of this section for the final climb to the summit of Carter Dome. The distance from Zeta Pass to Carter Dome is 1.2 miles via the Carter Dome Trail, slightly shorter than the AT route. 7/14/06 --- David Cullen --- |

15.40 miles Junction Wildcat Ridge/19 Mile Brook Trail |
Parking for the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail is a dirt area on the east side of NH 16. This is about 1 mile north of the Mt. Washington Auto Road and about 7 miles south of Gorham. A White Mountain National Forest parking permit (or equivalent) is required. The marker on the attached map shows the trailhead. --- This trail climbs 2500 feet in 3.8 miles. For some distance it follows Nineteen Mile Brook which can be seen going southeast from the trailhead on the satellite view of the attached map. At its highest point, the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail intersects the AT. The southbound AT goes right on the Wildcat Ridge Trail. The northbound AT continues straight ahead on the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail which descends about 100 feet in 0.2 miles to the junction with the Carter-Moriah Trail. The northbound AT goes left here. The Nineteen Mile Brook Trail continues a short distance further to Carter Notch Hut. 7/17/06 --- David Cullen --- |

18.30 miles Wildcat Mt. Gondola |
The Wildcat Mt. Ski area is on NH 16 about a mile north of the AMC Pinkham Notch facilities. The parking area is indicated my Marker C on the attached map. --- During the summer the gondola operates from 10 AM to 4:45 PM (weather permitting). There used to be a one-way fare, but I do not see any mention of it on the current Wildcat Mt. web site. The AT (here called the Wildcat Ridge Trail) is right behind the upper terminal. Southbound to Wildcat E and eventually Pinkham Notch is to the right. Northbound to Wildcats D-A (in that order) and eventually Carter Notch is to the left. 7/13/06 --- David Cullen --- |

If you are going to park overnight, talk to the people at the ticket desk. They had no problem with us parking overnight, but did ask us to park over on the side of the lot. 7/18/06 --- David Cullen --- |
