12.30 miles Jewell Trail |
The trail head for this trail is at the same place as the Amonoosuc Ravine Trail (See Mile 14.8). Access is also possible from the Cog Railway Base Station but the same warning as for the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail about a possible fee may apply here. --- This trail starts across the road from the USFS parking lot. The old trail to the Base Station goes right at 1.0 miles. (It is 0.4 miles to the Base Station). The Jewell Trail climbs 2950 feet in 3.7 miles to meet the Gulfside Trail (AT). Southbound to Mt. Washington is to the right, northobund to Madison Hut is to the left. 3/7/21 --- David Cullen --- |

13.10 miles Junction Gulfside/ Great Gulf Trails |
See Mile 4.1 for directions to the south junction of the Madison Gulf and Great Gulf Trails. This point may be accessed either from the Great Gulf Parking Area or from Pinkham Notch. --- I have never taken the Great Gulf Trail further than the Mile 4.1 junction. Information from the AMC White Mountain Guide, 27th ed. At the Mile 4.1 intersection, go west on the Great Gulf Trail. This goes 4.7 miles and climbs 3650 feet. The last section up the headwall is reportedly very steep, climbing 1600 feet in 0.8 miles, much of this over fragments of rock. It meets the Gulfside Trail (AT) near the Cog Railway. Via the southbound AT (which goes left), it is 0.4 miles to the summit of Mt. Washington. 3/7/21 --- David Cullen --- |

13.40 miles Mt. Washington Summit |
Obviously the easiest access is by car or by cog railway. The Mount Washington Auto Road (toll) leaves NH 16 about 8 miles south of Gorham. It is about 8 miles to the summit. You can drive yourself or the operators of the toll road have vans which they use to drive people to the summit. To reach the base station for the Cog Railway follow US 302 about 4.5 miles east from its junction with US 3 in Twin Mountain. The well-signed road to the Base Station goes left in the small community of Fabyan. Follow this road about 6 miles to its end at the base station. Reservations are strongly recommended for the cog railway. Ample parking both at the summit and at the bases of the Auto Road. Parking might be possible at the Cog Railway base station itself, although the White Mountain Guide warns an admission fee may be charged. Overnight parking is not allowed. Overnight parking is at the USFS lot a half mile west of the base station (See Mile 14.8). --- The attached map shows the summit area. 3/7/21 --- David Cullen --- http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Mount%20Washington%2C%20NH&sll… --- |

13.40 miles Mt. Washington Summit |
There are several routes to the summit from Pinkham Notch and the east side of the Presidential Range, but I will only mention the classic one, the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. I have not done this trail so information is mostly from the AMC White Mountain Guide.See mile 0.0 for information on parking at Pinkham Notch. --- The Tuckerman Ravine Trail starts just west of the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. It climbs 4250 feet in 4.2 miles to the summit. 3/7/21 --- David Cullen --- |

14.80 miles Lake of the Clouds Hut |
Access from the west is via the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail. The trailhead is at a USFS parking lot on the Base Road to the Cog Railway Depot. (See Mile 13.4 for directions to the Base Station.) The parking lot is 1.1 miles east of the junction with Mt. Clinton Road and about a half mile from the Base Station. A White Mountain National Forest parking permit (or equivalent) is required. Access to the trail from the Cog Railway Base Station is possible. This was the old trailhead. However be aware of the following statement from the AMC White Mountain Guide, 27th ed. Hikers who wish to visit or park at the Base Station itself should expect to pay an admission fee. --- The USFS parking lot can be seen on the satellite view of the attached map. From there the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail climbs 2500 feet in 3.1 miles to the hut, with 1500 feet of that climb occuring in the last mile. The junction with the old trail to the Base Station is 1 mile from the parking lot. The Base Station is 0.3 miles to the left.3/7/21 --- David Cullen --- http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=44.267%20-71.361&ie=UTF8&ll=44… --- |

14.80 miles Lake of the Clouds Hut |
There are many options to reach the hut from Pinkham Notch and the east side, but the most direct is via the Tuckerman Ravine Trail and the Tuckerman Crossover. See Mile 0.0 for information about Pinkham Notch. --- See Mile 13.4 for information about the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. Tuckerman Junction is reached at 3.6 miles from Pinkham Notch (3350 feet elevation gain). Follow the Tuckerman Crossover 0.8 miles across open terrain. It climbs about 100 feet then descends about 350 feet to meet the Gulfside Trail (AT) at Mile 14.6 near the Upper Lake of the Clouds. Go left on the southbound AT 0.2 miles to reach the hut.3/7/21 --- David Cullen --- |

16.80 miles Edmands Path |
I have not hiked this trail but have scouted the trailhead so information is from the AMC White Mountain Guide, 27th ed. There is a parking lot at the trailhead which is on the east side of Mt. Clinton Road, 2.3 miles north of the intersection with US 302. This intersection is about 8 miles southwest of the intersection of US 302 and US 3 in Twin Mountain. It is about a quarter mile further to the AMC facilities at Crawford Notch. Since the parking area, which is on the east side of Mt. Clinton Road, is on National Forest land, a White Mountain National Forest parking permit (or its equivalent) is required. The parking area can be seen on the satellite view of the attached map.One can also follow the Cog Railway Base Road 4.5 miles from US 302 (See Mile 10.8) to an intersection. Here the Jefferson Notch Road goes left, the Mount Clinton Road goes right. Follow the latter abut 1.5 miles to the parking area on the right (east) side of the road. --- This trail was laid out by J. R. Edmands many years ago. He made great efforts to construct a graded trail with comfortable grades. Much of that still remains. The trail climbs 2750 feet in 3.3 miles to reach the Crawford Path (AT) in the col between Mt. Franklin and Mt. Eisenhower.3/7/21 --- David Cullen --- http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Edmands%20Path%2C%20New%20Hamp… --- |

18.70 miles Junction Webster Cliffs/ Crawford Path |
The traditional trailhead for the Crawford Path is across from the AMC facilities at Crawford Notch on US 302. This still exists. Thee is a parking lot for the New Highland Center. While I suspect that this is primarily for visitors to the facility, I saw no signs prohibiting its use for trail parking, even overnight. However the official parking lot for the Crawford Path is on Mt. Clinton Road, a short distance north of the intersection with US 302. This intersection is about 8 miles southwest of the intersection of US 302 and US 3 in Twin Mountain. It is about a quarter mile further to the AMC facilities. . Since this parking area is on National Forest land, a White Mountain National Forest parking permit (or its equivalent) is required. The parking lot can be seen to the west of Mt. Clinton Road in ht upper left part of the satellite view of the attached map. This photo was probably taken the Highland Center was under construction. Parking is now at the north edge of the big open area in the view. --- The marker indicates the approximate location of the traditional Crawford Path trailhead on US 302. A new spur trail called the Crawford Connector leads 0.4 miles from the parking lot on Mt. Clinton Road to the actual Crawford Path. At the trail intersection, to the right it is 0.2 miles to US 302. To the left, the Crawford Path climbs 2350 feet in 3.1 miles to meet the AT. The southbound AT goes right as the Webster Cliffs Trail reaching the summit of Mt. Pierce in 0.1 miles. From here north to the summit of Mt. Washington, the Crawford Path is part of the AT. 3/7/21 --- David Cullen --- http://maps.google.com/maps?q=N44.22353%20W71.41162&hl=en&ll=44.222291%2C-71.41… --- |

19.70 miles Mizpah Cutoff |
See Mile 18.7 for information on the Crawford Path. --- From the parking lot of Mt. Clinton Road, follow the Crawford Connector and then the Crawford Path 1.9 miles climbing 1450 feet to the junction with the Mizpah Cutoff. Go right on this. In 0.6 miles and another 400 feet elevation gain, the junction with the Webster Cliffs Trail (AT) is reached. The southbound AT goes right. To the left it is 0.1 miles to Mizpah Hut via the northbound AT. Alternatively one might be able to park at the AMC Highland Center and follow the Crawford Path directly from US 302. It is 0.2 miles to the intersection with the Connector. See Mile 18.7. 3/7/21 --- David Cullen --- |

21.30 miles Mt. Jackson |
Parking for the Webster-Jackson Trail is at the AMC facilities at Crawford Notch on US 302. (See Mile 18.7) I also saw a parking pull over just across from the actual trailhead. --- The Webster-Jackson Trail starts on the east side of US 302 0.1 mile south of Crawford Deport (the AMC information facility). The route divides at 1.4 miles from US 302. The left branch is the Mount Jackson Branch which continues to meet the AT (here the Webster Cliffs Trail) at the summit of Mt. Jackson. The total length is 2.6 miles and involves 2150 feet of elevation gain. At the intersection with the AT, southbound is right, northbound left. 3/7/21 --- David Cullen --- |
